The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards Nominations Terms and Conditions

1. Eligibility criteria:

2. Nominees must be 18 years or over

3.. Must be working in the UK Space Industry* or a UK company or industry that benefits from or actively uses the work of the UK Space Industry.

*For the purposes of the Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards, the UK Space Industry is defined as organisations and individuals working for government, industry, defence, academia, commercial, public, not for profit and charities whose work supports the National Space Strategy and who are based in the UK.

4. The following category is open to individual women** only:

THE HAZEL AWARD.

The Hazel Award is for the most inspirational woman of the year in the

UK Space Industry, by celebrating an inspiring woman who positively

influences the Space sector in the UK through their exceptional contribution or outstanding achievement.

**The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards uses the Supreme

Court’s ruling of April 2025 which ruled that the legal definition of a

woman is based on biological sex

5. There are 4x SEREN AWARDS, each having the following eligibility criteria:

i. SEREN AWARD FOR WALES -the nominated individual must live and

work in the UK Space Industry in Wales

ii. SEREN AWARD FOR NORTHERN IRELAND - the nominated unsung

hero must live and work in the UK Space Industry in Northern Ireland

iii. SEREN AWARD FOR SCOTLAND - the nominated unsung hero must

live and work in the UK Space Industry in Scotland

iv. SEREN AWARD FOR ENGLAND - the nominated unsung hero must

live and work in the UK Space Industry in England

6. To be eligible for the SPACE MENTOR OF THE YEAR, both mentor and

mentee must work in or in support of the UK Space Industry. This award

celebrates mentors who inspire, nurture, guide and empower others through

their knowledge, experience, encouragement and example.

Our Judges will shortlist these nominees as part of the standard process. The

shortlist will then be managed by our partner Orbiteer, who will hold a public

vote to determine the winning finalist. Please note that these nominations and the public vote have a closing date of 1st May 2026

7. Nomination submissions All nominees and those who nominate others must be 18 years or over.

8. If you are nominating someone else, whether an individual or a team, you

must ensure you obtain their consent to nominate them and to provide us

with their contact details. It is also important to obtain their permission to allow their personal data to be processed by the Hazels – the UK Space Skills

Awards and its partners in this manner for the purposes of the Awards.

9. If you are nominating a team, partnership, or individual for an award, your

contact details may be shared with the Awards partners or other interested

parties, but only when necessary for the purposes of administering the

Awards.

10. Information provided in the nomination must not exceed the classification of ‘Official’. Information that is ‘Official Sensitive’ or higher must not be included.

11. The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards reserves the right in its absolute

discretion to move entries from one category to another if they feel it is

appropriate. 

12. Your nomination must reflect a true and accurate account of the attributes, achievements and impact of the actions of the nominated individual, team, partnership or team.

13. Should the details underpinning the nomination change substantially after

submission, the nominator must inform the Hazels- the UK Space Skills

Awards 

14. All nominees who are Shortlisted or selected to be a Finalist must agree to

publicity.  If you are unable to meet this requirement, you must inform the

Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards as soon as you are notified of your

nomination. You should email nominations@thehazels.space where we will

explore alternative options with you. This information will not be shared with

the Judges and will not impact your nomination.

15. All nominees who are Shortlisted or selected to be a Finalist are expected to provide a profile image and profile for use in promotions and publicity if

requested. This may include the use of the nominee’s profile, image or

images captured at any or all of the Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards

awards events.  The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards and its partners may

use the Shortlisted nominees/finalists’ images in all forms of media. All

nominees’ personal data will be held and processed in accordance with

the  The Hazels – the UK Space Skills Awards Privacy Policy .

16. Finalists and Winners may state in advertising/promotional activity and on

their letterhead that they are a Winner or Finalist, but this must include the

category and the year in which the award was won. Any other use will require

written permission from the Hazels-the UK Space Skills Awards

17. Any out-of-pocket expenses incurred by the nominees, or their nominators will not be reimbursed. 

18. Due to timing constraints at the Hazels- the UK Space Skills Gala Awards

Ceremony evening event, a limited number of awards will be presented on the evening itself.

19. All other finalists will be filmed being presented with their awards at an

alternative time and location, with extracts of the film being shown at the Gala Awards Ceremony and subsequently on social media.

20. Should you/your nominee be selected to the shortlist, you/your nominee will be notified of the date and location of the award presentation ceremony.

21. If you are unable to attend, you may nominate someone to attend and collect your award on your behalf. Winners may be required to answer brief

questions or give a short speech.

22. The Hazels-the UK Space Skills Awards reserves the right to cancel any or all of the categories and the Gala Awards Ceremony at any time in its absolute discretion. 

23. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence on their decision will be entered into. 

24. By submitting an entry, you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

SUBMITTING YOUR VIDEO/SELFIE

25. Your video/selfie should contain the following four elements:  

A. You/your nominee/your team/your partnership name

B. Name or reference of your nomination

C. Brief description of your nominated activity

D. Why you/your nominee/your team/your partnership should win

26. In each award category, the Judges are looking for:

Novelty of Skill Application

Audacity

Impact

Legacy

SUBMITTING IN AN ALTERNATIVE FORMAT

26. If submitting in alternative format:

A. Each entry should be no more than 2 x A4 written pages in Arial 12 point with 1.5 spacing.

B. Should drawings/diagrams/pictures/photos/technical information be required, this must be contained on 1 x A4 page).

C. No more than 2 x A4 written pages, with an additional 1 x A4 page if needed.

27. When judging submissions, the Judges look to see how the nominated

activity/behaviour/impact meets the criteria for each category

28. The key is to capture the attention of the Judges early. It is important to be concise and to provide context. Our judges may not have the same

background or experience as you, so please explain the significance of your

nomination in straightforward terms and language.  

29. For example, you may wish to provide a context of your nomination e.g.

evidence of the effect that this will have on others or a description of your day-to-day tasks

32. Nominations will close on 23:59 Thursday 26th March 2026

33.Nominations for space mentor of the year are run by our partner, Orbiteer. https://orbiteer.space/nominations/space-mentor These have a nomination closing date of 23:59 on Friday1 May 2026

34. The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards reserves the right in its absolute

discretion to move entries from one category to another if they feel it is

appropriate. 

Nomination modification/disqualification

35. The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards reserves the right to disqualify any nominee at any time if the nominee acts in a manner deemed by The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards management as not befitting a The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards which has sole discretion in the decision to disqualify any nominee and no correspondence will be entered into. In the event of disqualification, the nominee will not be permitted to use the The Hazels- the UK Space Skills Awards name or logo in any form or context whatsoever
